In this episode
In this episode, we continue our interview with sex educator, author, and artist Midori. We learn about the moment she took the leap to become a full-time sex educator. Midori tells us about writing “The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage”, and how the book that was expected to flop turned out to be an international success. Midori spills the honest reality of becoming a sex educator and advises someone interested in taking the plunge.
The Plunge into a Career as a Sex Educator
Midori tells us about how she took the plunge into a full-time sex educator career. She tells us that it was the scariest thing she’s ever done, even scarier than her time diving with bull sharks! Her push to pursue it came from the success of her first book “The Seductive Art of Japanese Bondage”. Midori has a direct and eloquent way with words, which is seen in her work in kink and sexuality. She lets us know she can be a stickler when it comes to word choice but believes it gives agency and clarity in communication and identity.
“ ‘I like to bottom to rope’ adds agency to the I, and it requires action and choice upon the me… by just using a few extra words and focusing it on agency and the person, I think it shifts even the way we frame play”
Redefining the Definition of Success
Midori has some honest advice for those pursuing a career in sexuality. She wants viewers to know that what she puts on the internet is only a small, idealized fantasy of what she actually does. For her to love her career, Midori had to redefine her definition of success and urge others to do the same. One piece of advice she gives is to find a mentor who will help you find your strengths and talents. Midori’s mentors and inspirations are those who have created art that defied conventions of their time. She’s also drawn inspiration from artists who have used various forms of multimedia to express themselves. She tells us that there is a multitude of paths in sexuality to take, even some that may seem unconventional such as politics and research.
Midori will be a part of Sexual Health Alliance’s upcoming SAR: Getting Our Own Kink on: For Helping Professionals. This will be a 3-day weekend experience with Midori to explore your own identity, your sexual self through the lens of Kink and BDSM.
